I want to start with one of the persons of the Trinity that I am most familiar with, the Holy Spirit. I love what the Nicene Creed says about the Holy Spirit.
“We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], Who is with the Father and the Son’s worship and glorified, who has spoken to the prophets”.
The Holy Spirit is my friend: I was told that by a group of godly people during prayer many years ago in Southampton, England. I desperately searched for the Holy Spirit to come over and fill me because I needed him as I do today. Paul said,
“And don’t get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living, but be filled by the Spirit:” (Ephesians 5,18 CSB17).
I have always been amazed by the way he uses the image of being drunk with wine! I have been drunk once with wine; I ate a yellow melon that was soaked in white wine. I was so hungry during a camping trip to the mountains in Chile that I ate it. After I finished, I was so unwell. I was overcome by the wine soaked into the flesh of the yellow melon. This did not lead me to reckless living, but my friends told me I talked all night. Is Paul saying that in the same way wine has a powerful effect on us, so is being filled with the Spirit? – Yes.
To be overcome and filled with the Spirit means that a more powerful force is filling me and leading me to live constantly in a state of joy! If the outcome of being filled with the Spirit is:
“Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart” (Ephesians 5,19 ESV).
Then I want to say yes and more of the Spirit in me. I am yearning for the Holy Spirit to dwell within me, to permeate every aspect of my life and bring about a profound transformation.
How much do you desire the Holy Spirit? Are you willing to be consumed by his powerful presence? Are you open to drinking from the Spring of Living Waters? Are you ready for this Spring to wash over you with its power, cleansing and renewing you with its joy?
We can all pray a powerful prayer, and it is only three words:” Come Holy Spirit.”
