I have always been curious about what Paul meant in Romans 4:17. In chapter four, Paul speaks about Abraham’s faith and how not only was he justified because of his faith in God, but the way this happened just wants me to believe even more in God who does the impossible. It is like “against all hope”, Abraham believed. That means that his life was not an easy one, and the promises of God came with sweat and tears.

Paul further mentioned that Abraham’s body was as good as dead v.19! Now think about this: “He gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.”
We know this to be true! Genesis 1 and 2, which are at the very beginning of God’s Word, tell us just that. The main force, wind, and powerful and almighty agents of God’s Creative Power were His Word and the Holy Spirit.

Abraham’s body is also a picture of the state of our souls, and just like the earth when this was formless, we can find ourselves in a place of nothing, void, and death. Yet the creating force of the Holy Spirit is more than enough to bring us back to life. The seed of Abraham in his old age and of Sarah’s womb opening, even though she was as old as her husband, tells us of the powerful God we worship, the one who creates new things out of nothing.
Today is the day when we become alive; let the same power that raised Christ from death create a new heart, to give us a fresh start and to create in us a new heart. Let us echo the words of David:
