Moving in Faith and Finding Guidance

Sometimes, seeing the way ahead in our lives is very hard. Life is sometimes not fair, but even that is questionable. How do we measure fairness? Who is fair? We tend to view fairness as justice, equality, and, if we are honest, selfishness.

The truth is that our sense of fairness is flawed. So, moving ahead, taking one step and then another, when life is complicated and full of unknowns is, at the very least, confusing and fearful.

Everyday decisions make life a gamble. We make some of those decisions because we know the outcome and are familiar with the process. Yet, when we are unfamiliar with the process and the result is uncertain, moving forward is complicated, and sometimes impossible.

It is a huge deal when we are asked to move to a place that is not familiar to us. It is a huge deal when we are forced to change direction because of illness, loss of employment, or the loss of a loved one. It is a huge deal when the Lord asks you to move to a land that you have never been to conquer, settle in it, and form a nation. This is what Abraham’s life was about; he was asked to leave his land and country to go to the promised land on the wings of a promise, and to our surprise, he did and trusted the Lord. He was credited as righteous and justified because he believed in the Lord.

The key is not just on faith alone, like a hunch or a feeling. It is much deeper than that. It is founded upon a revelation of God. Abraham knew the LORD, he spoke to him ” The LORD said”. How do we know that? The clue is in the name of the LORD. Yahweh’ is God’s personal name for himself, by which his people invoke him as the Lord who had taken them into covenant with himself to do them good.
So, when you know someone is trustworthy, we can move ahead knowing that we are not alone. This is why I believe David knew this so well when he wrote:

Are we prepare to move in faith, trusting the one who calls us, whose self revelation is on his name alone?
