“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
(Ephesians 2,10 NLT-SE)
Last week I was invited to share on the Secondary College that my daughter attends. For years I have been warning her that I have been invited to speak to their assembly only to hear from her that if I do she will miss that day and stay in her room. So much for support!! But I get it, she does not want to be known as the daughter of the Minister. This does not bother me at all, in fact it has the very opposite effect in me. Why?
Because she does not to live on the expectations of others, or being known as the daughter of the minister. She has her own identity, personality, gifting and purpose in life, just like many of you. I do remember that when I growing up, as a child I liked to be known as my Father’s son. I took pride on that, specially as he worked for NASA. But when I became a young man, I searched for own identity and for my place in this world. I was never embarrassed about my dad, but I could never live to his or other expectations, why? Because we are different. My dad was always good at math, he had to be. I am not and I don’t have to be.
What I do know is that I am wonderfully made and God takes pride and he is fully satisfied, happy about this human being that he created.
At the College I was invited to share about the difference between different strands of the Christian Faith, my brother the local Priest was there and it was great. I heard from young people finding faith in Jesus and from teachers also sharing their experiences of what it means to have God in your life. Well, I did not keep the script, but I shared about my own journey of faith and how after a period of struggling with identity and being liked by people I began to pay attention to what God thinks of me and that changed my thinking and the way I view life.
I know that I am a masterpiece, this is what Paul says about us, that “we are God’s masterpiece created in Christ Jesus” (Eph. 2:10). The College Hall was packed with young people, some of them very young and I challenged them to see themselves as God sees them. Later at the end of the meeting the Principle picked up on the theme that we are God’s masterpiece to remind those assembled that we are beautiful people in Jesus.
